How the course does it
This is roughly a golf course's 'first cut' or intermediate rough: bluegrass and ryegrass mowed at 2 to 3 inches, fed four times a year, overseeded every fall.

How you do it
- Mow high (3 inches) and often, never removing more than a third
- Feed three times: Memorial Day, Labor Day, Halloween
- Overseed every September so there is no bare soil for weeds
- Sharp blade, always. Buy a second blade and swap monthly
- Water 1 inch a week in one or two deep soakings, not daily sprinkles
