Broadleaf plantain

Plantago major

Oval leaves in a flat rosette with a tall skinny seed spike. The signature weed of compacted soil along paths and play areas.

How to tell
  • •Broad oval leaves with parallel veins
  • •Leaves lie flat, survive mowing
  • •Tall narrow seed stalks like a rat tail
  • •Grows where soil is packed hard
Why it is in your lawn

Compaction. Plantain tolerates hard, low-oxygen soil that grass cannot.

Best window

Any time it is growing. Aeration in fall prevents next year's.

1 · Fix the cause
  1. Core aerate in September
  2. Pull with a weeder; the root is fibrous and comes up easily
  3. Topdress with compost to loosen soil
