Common chickweed

Stellaria media

A low, bright-green mat with tiny white star flowers that shows up in March and dies in June heat. Shallow roots, pulls up like a rug.

  • •Single line of hairs along the stem
  • •Thrives in cool, moist, shady spots

Thin turf in fall gives it room to germinate over winter.
