Creeping Charlie (ground ivy)

Glechoma hederacea

The hardest lawn weed in the Midwest. Square stems, scalloped round leaves, purple flowers in April, and it roots at every node so one plant becomes a mat.

How to tell
  • •Round, scalloped, kidney-shaped leaves
  • •Square stems (roll one between your fingers)
  • •Small purple-blue flowers in April and May
  • •Minty smell when crushed
  • •Spreads in shade and moist areas
Why it is in your lawn

Shade, moisture, and compacted soil. It wins wherever grass is weak, especially under trees and along north-facing fences.

Best window

Late September through mid-October, when the plant is pulling sugars into its roots, is the only window that gives lasting control.

1 · Fix the cause
  1. Hand-pull after rain, getting every rooted node, then overseed with fine fescue in shade
  2. Prune trees to let more light hit the lawn
  3. Core aerate compacted areas
2 · Eco product

Iron HEDTA is the only eco product with a real effect. Three applications, three weeks apart, in May, then again in September. Smothering with cardboard and mulch for 8 weeks works for a dense patch you are willing to reseed.

What you are signing up for

You may be managing this for years rather than eliminating it. The win condition is a thick fescue lawn in the shade that holds it to a few sprigs you pull each spring.

Active ingredient
Triclopyr
Typical product
Ortho Weed B Gon Chickweed Clover and Oxalis, Triclopyr 4
Why we do not recommend it
Triclopyr is the only conventional chemistry that reliably works, and even it needs repeat fall applications. It harms the trees whose shade caused the problem.

We never link to or price-track conventional herbicides. This panel exists so you understand what a service is selling you.
