Nimblewill

Muhlenbergia schreberi

A fine, wiry, blue-green warm-season grass that goes straw-brown from October to May, leaving dead-looking patches in an otherwise green lawn.

How to tell
  • •Thin wiry stems that root at the nodes
  • •Short blades held at a right angle to the stem
  • •Patches that turn tan in fall and green up late in spring
  • •Common in shady, moist areas
Why it is in your lawn

Shade and moisture, like creeping Charlie.

Best window

April, while it is still brown and visible.

1 · Fix the cause
  1. Dig out patches in spring when the brown spots are obvious, reseed with fine fescue
  2. Improve light and drainage
2 · Eco product

No eco product is selective for it. Dig in April when it is dormant and easy to see.

No eco product works on this one. Honest.
What you are signing up for

The brown patches tell you exactly where to dig.

Active ingredient
Mesotrione
Typical product
Tenacity
Why we do not recommend it
Three applications and it bleaches the lawn white between them. Digging is faster for typical patch sizes.

We never link to or price-track conventional herbicides. This panel exists so you understand what a service is selling you.
