Purslane

Portulaca oleracea

A succulent mat with reddish stems and paddle leaves that shows up in hot, bare, dry soil in July. Edible, actually.

How to tell
  • •Thick, fleshy, succulent leaves
  • •Reddish prostrate stems
  • •Tiny yellow flowers
  • •Appears in bare dry spots in midsummer
Why it is in your lawn

Bare soil plus heat. It cannot germinate under turf.

Best window

July, before it flowers.
