Quackgrass

Elymus repens

A coarse, fast-growing grass that spreads by sharp white rhizomes and looks almost like the lawn until it outgrows it. Nothing selective kills it.

How to tell
  • •Wide, dull blue-green blades with a rough feel
  • •Clasping auricles (little claws) where the blade meets the stem
  • •Long white rhizomes with pointed tips
  • •Grows faster and taller than the lawn between mowings
Why it is in your lawn

Arrives in cheap seed, topsoil, or from a neighbor's bed. Spreads underground into thin turf.

Best window

Summer smothering, September reseeding.

1 · Fix the cause
  1. Dig out small patches completely, sift rhizomes, reseed
  2. For a large infestation: smother with black plastic for 8 weeks in summer, then reseed
2 · Eco product

No selective product, eco or conventional, kills quackgrass without killing the lawn. Digging and smothering are the only routes.

No eco product works on this one. Honest.
What you are signing up for

Small patches: dig. Large: this is a renovation project, not a weed.

Reference only · what the truck would spray
Active ingredient
Glyphosate (non-selective)
Typical product
Roundup
Why we do not recommend it
Kills everything it touches, and quackgrass regrows from rhizome pieces it missed. Smothering does the same job without the chemistry.

We never link to or price-track conventional herbicides. This panel exists so you understand what a service is selling you.
