White clover

Trifolium repens

Three-leaf patches with white flowers that bees love. It fixes nitrogen from the air, which is why it shows up in hungry lawns. Many eco lawns keep it on purpose.

How to tell
  • •Three round leaflets, often with a pale chevron
  • •White ball-shaped flowers in June
  • •Creeping stems that root at the nodes
  • •Stays green in drought when grass browns
Why it is in your lawn

Low nitrogen. Clover thrives where the lawn is underfed, so a well-fed lawn gradually outcompetes it.

Best window

Late spring and early fall, when it is growing fast.

1 · Fix the cause
  1. Feed the lawn: Milorganite in May and September
  2. Mow high so grass shades the low clover
  3. Decide whether you actually want it gone; a clover-bluegrass mix is drought-proof and feeds itself
2 · Eco product

Iron HEDTA knocks clover back hard; two applications 3 weeks apart. Then feed the lawn so it does not return.

What you are signing up for

If you want it gone, the real fix is feeding the lawn. Spraying without feeding is a treadmill.

Active ingredient
Triclopyr, dicamba, or quinclorac mixes
Typical product
Ortho Weed B Gon Chickweed Clover and Oxalis
Why we do not recommend it
Triclopyr damages tree roots under the lawn. Clover is a soil-improver, not a problem, unless you want a pure stand.
