Wild onion and wild garlic

Allium canadense, Allium vineale

Clumps of hollow, round, dark-green leaves that shoot up in March and smell like onion when mowed. Grows from bulbs.

How to tell
  • •Round hollow leaves (garlic) or flat solid leaves (onion)
  • •Strong onion smell when cut
  • •Tall clumps in early spring before the lawn wakes up
  • •Bulb with offsets underground
Why it is in your lawn

Thin turf in early spring.

Best window

March and November, when the lawn is short and clumps stand out.

1 · Fix the cause
  1. Dig the whole clump with a trowel, including offset bulbs
  2. Do not pull; leaves break off and the bulb stays
2 · Eco product

Iron HEDTA has limited effect on the waxy leaves. Digging is the real fix.

Active ingredient
2,4-D + dicamba with surfactant
Typical product
Weed B Gon with added surfactant
Why we do not recommend it
Needs multiple fall applications even then. A trowel in March is faster.
